背景
Rhodopsin is a light-sensitive receptor protein found in the retina, primarily in the rod cells of the eye. It plays a crucial role in vision by enabling the detection of light, particularly in low-light conditions. Rhodopsin is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family and consists of a protein component, opsin, bound to a light-absorbing molecule called retinal (a form of vitamin A). When rhodopsin absorbs photons of light, retinal undergoes a conformational change, triggering a cascade of biochemical events that ultimately send electrical signals to the brain, allowing for visual perception. Rhodopsin is vital for night vision and overall visual function, and defects in rhodopsin or its signaling pathways are associated with various visual disorders, including retinitis pigmentosa and other retinal degenerative diseases.
